If you are patiently waiting for spring, then this post is for you….

For those of us living in the northern climates, boating season still seems a long way off. Maybe a few of these suggestions will help ease the wait as we anticipate warmer weather.
  • Check out a boat show. They are in full swing this time of year.
  • Thumb through your boating magazines or pick up a couple of new ones.
  • Dig out the photos you took last summer on your dinghy or boat and enjoy the memories.
  • Make a list of gear and equipment your vessel needs and don’t forget a ProDav Swivel Davit System.
  • Jot down harbors you’d like to visit this summer.
  • Plan a boating excursion with fellow boaters and get it on the calendar now.

Fall Boating

Many boaters think that Labor Day signals the last days of summer and the end of the boating season.  They get their boats ready for winter, load their gear and store their dinghies until spring.  These boaters are missing out on some of the best boating days of the year; Fall Boating!  So what’s so great about boating in the fall?  Sure, there’s a definite crispness to the air as the sun rises later and sets earlier but the beauty of autumn is phenomenal. The leaves are changing color, geese are flying south, and the night sky is exceptionally bright with stars you can almost touch.  Fall festivals are in full swing and it’s usually easier and less expensive to get a dock at the marinas that were too full over the summer.  Don’t wait; get out there and enjoy these final days of boating even if you just launch your dinghy and take a leisurely ride around your own harbor.

All of us at ProDav think fall is an amazing time for boating! So many beautiful things to see and experience.

Question….

…what is a type of small boat, often carried or towed for use by a larger vessel?  If you answered a dinghy [a dory, tender, life boat, inflatable, pinnace or rib] you are correct!  As most seasoned boaters will tell you, a dinghy is a necessity.  It’s not only a safety feature in case of an emergency but it expands and increases your boating fun.  So whether you’re exploring the nooks and crannies of Canada’s North Channel, exploring the fjords of Norway or zipping across the harbor to see friends, a dinghy is a must have. Loading, launching and transporting your dinghy on your boat should be easy and effortless.  This way a boater is more likely to use their dinghy and add to their boating pleasure.  The ProDav Swivel Davit System is all of that; easy and effortless to load, launch and transport your dinghy.

How will you transport your dinghy? The ProDav Swivel Davit System is the answer!

Captains OR First Mates

It’s the age old boaters question (or maybe not) as to who has the more important or most demanding job… the Captain or the First Mate.  Well let’s examine the evidence and take a look at the job “requirements”.

The first mate has to ready the bow line, spring line and stern line for docking. This requires speed and agility to move from the bow to the stern, usually in just a few moments.  The captain tells the first mate which side to fasten the lines; starboard or port.  This can change at the last minute if the captain decides he’d rather back in; again speed and agility come into play.  The first mate must then be able to toss the lines accurately to the dock hands and secure the fenders to the cleats. First mates watch for obstacles in the water, secure the boating gear, stow the lines and fenders once the boat is underway. When boat traffic increases or a storm brews with wind and rain and building waves, tensions can run high.  It is up to the first mate to follow the captain’s orders [even as he yells] and remain calm until they are safely docked.

The captain plots the course for the voyage studying way points and charts, checks the radio, electronics, fuel gauges, wind and weather. The captain pilots the boat and docks the boat and must also keep an eye out for deadheads, fish nets, and other water vessels.  This requires constant vigilance.  A good captain is ever watchful for these potential dangers.  The captain has the overall responsibility for the safety of the crew, the passengers and the vessel itself.

Obviously, both jobs are equally important and necessary! The first mate and captain work as partners and a team like a well-oiled machine to ensure an enjoyable boating trip with no damage to their vessel or themselves.

Make EVERY day a BOATING day!

There’s nothing more relaxing than being on the water on a beautiful summer day.  The sunshine, blue skies, warm temperatures, and calm water call to our inner self to pack up the cooler, load the boat and cast off for a favorite spot.  Every boater has a special place to moor out and hang a hook or raft off with boating friends.  Maybe it’s a cove around the bend, an inlet across the lake or a secluded natural harbor. Wherever it is, get out and enjoy the water. Soak up the sunshine! Create lasting memories with family and friends! Make every day a boating day!

Sturgeon Bay, WI is a favorite destination of ours. Once docked, we like to launch our dinghy from our ProDav Swivel Davit System and explore Door County. Make every day a boating day!
