Many boaters think that Labor Day signals the last days of summer and the end of the boating season. They get their boats ready for winter, load their gear and store their dinghies until spring. These boaters are missing out on some of the best boating days of the year; Fall Boating! So what’s so great about boating in the fall? Sure, there’s a definite crispness to the air as the sun rises later and sets earlier but the beauty of autumn is phenomenal. The leaves are changing color, geese are flying south, and the night sky is exceptionally bright with stars you can almost touch. Fall festivals are in full swing and it’s usually easier and less expensive to get a dock at the marinas that were too full over the summer. Don’t wait; get out there and enjoy these final days of boating even if you just launch your dinghy and take a leisurely ride around your own harbor.
All of us at ProDav think fall is an amazing time for boating! So many beautiful things to see and experience.

It’s the age old boaters question (or maybe not) as to who has the more important or most demanding job… the Captain or the First Mate. Well let’s examine the evidence and take a look at the job “requirements”.
The first mate has to ready the bow line, spring line and stern line for docking. This requires speed and agility to move from the bow to the stern, usually in just a few moments. The captain tells the first mate which side to fasten the lines; starboard or port. This can change at the last minute if the captain decides he’d rather back in; again speed and agility come into play. The first mate must then be able to toss the lines accurately to the dock hands and secure the fenders to the cleats. First mates watch for obstacles in the water, secure the boating gear, stow the lines and fenders once the boat is underway. When boat traffic increases or a storm brews with wind and rain and building waves, tensions can run high. It is up to the first mate to follow the captain’s orders [even as he yells] and remain calm until they are safely docked.
The captain plots the course for the voyage studying way points and charts, checks the radio, electronics, fuel gauges, wind and weather. The captain pilots the boat and docks the boat and must also keep an eye out for deadheads, fish nets, and other water vessels. This requires constant vigilance. A good captain is ever watchful for these potential dangers. The captain has the overall responsibility for the safety of the crew, the passengers and the vessel itself.
Obviously, both jobs are equally important and necessary! The first mate and captain work as partners and a team like a well-oiled machine to ensure an enjoyable boating trip with no damage to their vessel or themselves.
