It’s the age old boaters question (or maybe not) as to who has the more important or most demanding job… the Captain or the First Mate. Well let’s examine the evidence and take a look at the job “requirements”.
The first mate has to ready the bow line, spring line and stern line for docking. This requires speed and agility to move from the bow to the stern, usually in just a few moments. The captain tells the first mate which side to fasten the lines; starboard or port. This can change at the last minute if the captain decides he’d rather back in; again speed and agility come into play. The first mate must then be able to toss the lines accurately to the dock hands and secure the fenders to the cleats. First mates watch for obstacles in the water, secure the boating gear, stow the lines and fenders once the boat is underway. When boat traffic increases or a storm brews with wind and rain and building waves, tensions can run high. It is up to the first mate to follow the captain’s orders [even as he yells] and remain calm until they are safely docked.
The captain plots the course for the voyage studying way points and charts, checks the radio, electronics, fuel gauges, wind and weather. The captain pilots the boat and docks the boat and must also keep an eye out for deadheads, fish nets, and other water vessels. This requires constant vigilance. A good captain is ever watchful for these potential dangers. The captain has the overall responsibility for the safety of the crew, the passengers and the vessel itself.
Obviously, both jobs are equally important and necessary! The first mate and captain work as partners and a team like a well-oiled machine to ensure an enjoyable boating trip with no damage to their vessel or themselves.

There’s nothing more relaxing than being on the water on a beautiful summer day. The sunshine, blue skies, warm temperatures, and calm water call to our inner self to pack up the cooler, load the boat and cast off for a favorite spot. Every boater has a special place to moor out and hang a hook or raft off with boating friends. Maybe it’s a cove around the bend, an inlet across the lake or a secluded natural harbor. Wherever it is, get out and enjoy the water. Soak up the sunshine! Create lasting memories with family and friends! Make every day a boating day!
Sturgeon Bay, WI is a favorite destination of ours. Once docked, we like to launch our dinghy from our ProDav Swivel Davit System and explore Door County. Make every day a boating day!
“I tried more than 2 years to find an easy way to lift a dinghy on my 45 Foot Princess boat , I was thinking to put Hydraulic system but was very expensive and also needed high maintenance especially in Kuwait. Also I was looking for lifting Davit system with winch but also need a lot of modifications in the body of my boat , I look at PRODAV system and I bought one and I said myself
let me try it and very reasonable price and if not doing what I want I will take it and close only the small holes. It took me around 30 min to install it alone, I took a dinghy from my friend it around 11Foot weight with the engine 300 lb with fiber bottom and try it . WOW it is very simple and easy you do not need anybody to help you to launch or retrieve it and also you can take it out only you need to pull the 2 pins. The ProDav it is very cheap and easy solution and also very strong . Also I try it in high speed and in rough weather , did not change my boat performance or speed , even NOW I going to buy a dinghy after 2 years of searching for a system to lift a dinghy . Thanks ProDav for a simple and easy way!”
